Develpoment meet cancelled due to volcanic eruption

The 4th Development Meet scheduled for this Saturday has been cancelled, due to the eruption of the La Soufriere volcano.

For months, the volcano, located at the northern tip of the island, has been going through an effusive eruption, which is a slow constant flow of magma. Last Tuesday, a series of small tremors began to occur, referred to as a swarm of tectonic earthquakes. The swarm eventually subsided.

Yesterday morning, another occurrence of a swarm became evident, but this time it was more intense. So much so, that an emergency press briefing was called at 12:30 p.m. to update the nation. The swarm continued to intensify, prompting Prime Minister, The Hon. Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, upon the advice of the scientists monitoring the volcano, to issue an order of evacuation.

At approximately 9 o clock on Friday morning, the volcano entered into an explosive eruption, spewing an ash cloud as high as 20,000 feet in the air.

As this update is being done at about 3 pm on Friday, the volcano went into a second explosive eruption, emitting an ash cloud even bigger than the previous one this morning.

Due to the uncertainty of this pending disaster the Games Director, Rawlson Morgan has decided to cancel tomorrow’s mini meet. Team Athletics SVG wishes everyone God’s blessings at this time, and urges all to stay safe.
