National Championship Trials over 2 weekends
Over the next two weekends, at the Sir Vincent Beache National Stadium, athletes in St. Vincent & the Grenadines will be vying for places in the TASVG National Championships, slated for July 3rd and 4th. As a means of eliminating the congestion of competitors on the 2 days, where numerous athletes would be on hand to compete in qualifying rounds and finals, the trials will be held over 2 Saturdays. This will also allow for some measure of physical distancing.
The age groups and respective events are as follows:
Under 15:
80m, 200m, 400m, 1000m/1200m, 4 x 100m, 4 x 200m, Long Jump, High Jump, Shot Put, Baseball Throw

The 3000m for women and 5000m for men will also be held in the Open category, allowing for any athlete to take part.
This Saturday will see the 100m, 400m, 1000m/1200m/1500m, Shot Put, High Jump, 4 x 100m events, while the events for Saturday June 26th will be the 200m, 800m, Discus Throw, 4 x 200m & 4 x 400m.
Most of the nation’s Under 20 athletes may be in high anticipation of the championships, after losing the opportunity for 2 consecutive years, to compete at the premier Track & Field event, The Inter Schools Athletics Championships (ISAC), due to the Coronavirus.
Top athletes expected to be on show include Isreal Cumberbatch in the Under 15 Boys category, Shonte Matthias in the Under 17 girls, Kyle Lawrence and Sage Primus, who have all been in outstanding form.
Amal Glasgow and Nellie Ambriton of the Xcel Track Club will face of with High Performance’s Kriston Wyllie, in the U20 Mens middle distance events, and the men’s High Jump battle will continue between Godwyn Roban and Calroy Haddaway, of Xcel.
One notable absence from the National Championships trials this year, will be that of 2019 National Female Junior Athlete of the Year, Ulanda Lewis. The double Carifta Games bronze medallist suffered a slight hamstring injury during a development meet earlier, and has been sidelined while recovering.
Head Coach of the High Performance Track Club, Chester Morgan, noted that he’s not rushing her return to the track, as there is the NACAC Age Group Championships approaching.
The trials are set to start at 2:30 on both Saturdays.
