Jamaican female sprinters seize Diamond League limelight
Jamaica’s sprint queens, Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, continue to set the pace for this year’s World Athletics Championships scheduled for Eugene, Oregon, in July.
On Saturday, competing in the 100m, Thompson-Herah showed fine form, easily winning in a time of 10.79, second fastest in the world this year behind team-mate, Fraser-Pryce’s 10.67, set earlier in the year.
The USA’s Sha’Carrie Richardson, was second to Thompson-Herah in a time of 10.92, her best for the year, with Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson in third in 10.92.
Meanwhile. In the 200m, Fraser-Pryce showed a clean pair of heels to her opponents as she led from start to finish, covering the distance in 22.79. Behind her were the USA’s Brittany Brown (22.74) and Anthonique Strachan of The Bahamas (22.76).
The Jamaican performances came as they competed in the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League event at the same Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, in which the World Championships will take place in a few weeks’ time.
Guadeloupe hosts and Wins 4th International Friendship Games
The 4th edition of the International Friendship Games was hosted by the Athletics League of Martinique on Saturday 28 May at the Louis-Achille Stadium in Fort-de-France, the capital city. A total of 11 member, associate member and guest federations of NACAC were in attendance at what proved to be an exciting track and field competition in the U17 and U20 categories. Present were: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Guadeloupe, French Guyana, Haiti, Martinique,
St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Maarten and St Vincent and the Grenadines. The overseas participants made this edition of the Games the largest in its relatively short history.
When the curtains came down on the day’s competition, Guadeloupe had emerged the most successful team with a total of 15 gold, two silver and four bronze, ahead of Martinique with six gold, 12 silver and 12 bronze, and Antigua and Barbuda third with five gold and seven silver medals.
For many of the participants the competition was a welcome one given the extensive lockdown to which some of them were subjected during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The International Friendship Games was established by Alain Jean-Pierre, president of that country’s Athletics Federation, following the border conflict between the Dominican Republic and Haiti in May 2017 which left 17 persons dead. The presidents of the member federations of both countries committed to establish the International Friendship Games between them to commemorate the incident as well as to show that sport, and particularly athletics, could bring people together in unity and put an end to conflict of any sort.
While the original intent was to have the International Friendship Games involve the two countries that were involved in the 2017 conflict, the sheer nature of the sport of athletes eventually led to an expansion of invitations to others in NACAC. The fact that this year’s celebration, the first time in Martinique, attracted 11 federations is testimony to the understanding, cooperation and commitment of an increasing number of NACAC members to choosing sport as a vehicle to combat conflict.
NACAC is extremely proud of the initiative and commends Jean-Pierre for his vision in this regard.
NACAC also congratulates the Martinique Athletics League for stepping forward to host this year’s 4th edition of the International Friendship Games, a Caribbean initiative.

NACAC encourages participation in ‘Grant for Growth 2022’
Always eager to be a leader in global athletics NACAC is encouraging its member federations to quickly take advantage of the latest initiative on offer from World Athletics, ‘Grant for Growth 2022’.
According to World Athletics, the Grant for Growth 2022’ is a one-off grant “to assist Member Federations to continue previously funded AOD projects or to initiate new project-based activities”.
The intention is to support member federation projects that respond to their development needs and fall within the ambit of the World Plan approved at last year’s World Athletics Congress.
The four overarching strategic goals of the World Plan are:
More Participation – To maximise participation in Athletics and the development of athletes. More People – To maximise the opportunities for coaches, officials, administrative personnel, and volunteers to work closely with Member Federations on recruitment and development and embedding gender equity.
More Fans – To grow the fan base to help protect the long-term health of Athletics. More Partnerships – To make clear to all stakeholders the mutual benefits of increasing opportunities for partnerships in Athletics.
NACAC here reminds its Member Federations that “to apply for the Grant for Growth, Member Federations must submit a project application through the new online World Athletics Grants Hub by the deadline of 15 June 2022”.
