Bromell and Thompson-Herah shine at Inaugural NACAC New Life Invitational
Trayvon and Elaine Thompson-Herah further etched their name sin the annals of track and field history when they literally stole the show at the inaugural NACAC New Life Invitational on Saturday 5 June 2021.
The small but knowledgeable aficionados of the sport gathered in support of some of the best athletes in the world afforded the athletes, Bromell and Thompson-Herah the most deserving of accolades for their stunning performances.
Bromell, a talented athlete who has made a remarkable recovery from injury that kept him away from the sport for over two years, blazed the track to an historic 9.77 in the final of the 100m. Marvin Bracey (9.85) and Chris Royster (10.08) made it an all US podium finish in the event. St Kitts and Nevis’ Jason Rogers was fourth (10.10).
For her part, Thompson-Herah took the 100m in 10.87 and 45 minutes later, won the 200m in
22.54, both with relative ease. Tianna Bartoletta (10.96) of the US and Jamaica’s Briana Williams (10.97) finished second and third respectively in the 100m while in the 200m, Kyra Jefferson of the US (22.77) and Great Britain’s Jodie Williams (23.10) followed Thompson- Herah home in the 200m.
In the men’s Discus, Samoa’s Alex Rose (67.12m) finished of Jamaica’s Fedrick Dacres (66.01m) for the second consecutive occasion in recent weeks. Kai Chang (63.33m) of Jamaica was third, ahead of USA’s Josh Syrotchen (62.32m) and Ireland’s Colin Quirke (59.61m) Dalilah Muhammad of the US easily won the 400mH for women in a time of 54.50, ahead of Jamaica’s Ronda Whyte (55.65) and Yanique Haye-Smith of Turks and Caicos (56.12). Grace Claxton of Puerto Rico finished in fourth.
Marci Arop of Canada won the men’s 800m in 1:44.93, ahead of Alex Amankwah (1:47.11) of Ghana with Puerto Rico’s Ryan Sanchez (1:47.22) and Edose Ibadan (1:47.29) of Nigeria in fourth.
Trinidad and Tobago’s only victory at the meet came through Deon Lendore in the 400m (45.48), ahead of US’s Lashawn Meritt ((46.22), Alonzo Russell (46.44) of The Bahamas and Ezequiel Suarez (46.79) of Puerto Rico.
CADICA’s athletes also gave good account through Gerald Drummond and Andrea Vargas of Costa Rica, respectively. Drummond won the men’s 400mH (49.47) while Vargas (12.76) finished second to Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan who won the 100mH in 12.44.
Saturday’s Inaugural NACAC New Life Invitational attracted more than 185 athletes from 29
countries.
It was an elated Mike Sands, President of NACAC, who expressed his own satisfaction with the organisation’s efforts and thanked Panam Sports’ President, Neven Ilic, for his support with the international coverage. The Miramar authorities, member federations, agents, athletes, coaches, officials and patrons, were also congratulated and profoundly thanked for their respective roles in the event’s realisation.

Central American member federation, Belize, convened its annual National Championships, 29 –
30 May 2021.
Mia Sylvester completed the double in winning the Discus Throw (38.09m) and the Shot Put
(12.46m) respectively.
Brandon Adolphus also did the double but in the 800m (2:02.06) and 1500m (4:14.63)
respectively.
Shaun Gill won the men’s 10m in 10.55 while Hilary Gladden won the women’s version in
12.20. Jada Logan won the women’s 200m (28.53) while Mark Anderson won the men’s 200m
(22.40).
The event was most welcomes by athletes, coaches and the sporting fraternity of Belize. President, Deon Sutherland, expressed his organisation’s appreciation to the athletes, coaches, parents, officials, patrons and sponsors, for helping to realise a successful edition of the Championships.

Athletics aficionados of the Cayman Islands were treated to exciting track and field competition when the member federation – CIAA – hosted its annual National Championships, 4 – 5 June
2021.
Caymanian athletes were supported by a packed stadium of fans eager to share the freedom that facilitated track and field competition and an impressive opening ceremony attended by government officials.
Meet Director, Maxine Anglin, likened this year’s competition to a mini-international meet as she was impressed by the high standard of organization of the two-day event. She highlighted that in period of global pandemic she was indeed elated that the Cayman Islands were able have events throughout culminating in National Championships.
Ms Anglin expressed gratitude to the athletes who competed, all officials, coaches, and volunteers for the support throughout the season. Special appreciation was extended to CIAA Meets Committee under the guidance of Competition Director, Ms Cydonie Mothersill, who diligently worked behind the scenes to make the event a success.
The CIAA expressed its appreciation to the Ministry of Sports, the Olympic Committee (CIOC), and the Department of Sports for their continued support.

El Salvador hosted the National Major Championships and Children’s Tournament on 5 and 6
June 2021.
More than 275 athletes from 24 teams from all over the country participated in the weekend’s
event, and featured athletes from age six (6) to the Masters’ (aged over 50 years).
The keen competition led to the establishment of three (3) national records in the U18 and U20 categories.
The competition was the last qualifying event for selection to the national team that will represent El Salvador in the Greater Central American Championship to be held in Costa Rica at the end of June.

World and Olympic Champion, Shelley-Ann Fraser, competing for Elite Track Club, pushed herself into further athletics history on Saturday last when she produced the second fastest women’s 100m of all time, 10.63. Jamaican threat in the event, Elaine Thompson-Herah, was doing the 100m/200m double at the same time while competing in the Inaugural NACAC New Life Invitational in Miramar, Ft Lauderdale, Florida.
Natasha Morrison and Kashieka Cameron, both of MVP were left well behind in 10.95 and 11.39 respectively.
In the men’s 100m, Seville of Oblique Racers Trac Club won in 10.10 followed home by Julian
Forte of MVP (10.15) and Bryan Levell of Edwin Allen (10.21) respectively.

The ever-improving, Handal Roban, continued his progress with a second place finish in the
800m at the third and final JOA/JAAA Destiny Meet at the Jamaican national stadium on
Saturday last.
Roban’s 1:49.94 performance saw him break his own recently established U20 national record for the event. This serves him in good stead for the NACAC U18/U23 Championships set for Costa Rica, 9 – 11 June 2021.
In related news, Akani Slater finished third in the 800m at the same competition with a time of
47.30. He has been consistent with his performances thus far for 2021. OJ Jackson finished 12th in 48.99.
