We are now in the month of July. It seems like such a very long time that we have not had the pleasure of engaging in the numerous planned competition and training activities. Happily, we have not been idle. Several of our coaches have been holding sessions with small groups of athletes while adhering to the health protocols. We have also had some Mini Meets at Sion Hill.
During the pandemic we have invited coaches to participate in a slew of online coaches’ education activities. This week NACAC will offer its NACAC Continuing Coaches Education Programme aimed at persons interested in coaching track and field but who have never been to any World Athletics Courses. It is a Pre-Level 1 programme that has a series of five Units. TASVG’s Technical Director, Chester Morgan, is one of the lecturers who have been chosen for the delivery of Units in the programme.
We have also been in communication with many of our overseas athletes. We are heartened by the return to training by Adonson Shallow who will focus on the Hammer Throw and Discus. Jummone Exeter who sat out last year due to injury, operation and recovery, is back in training.
Our most sincere congratulations go out to Shafiqua Maloney who had not only been excelling on the track before the pandemic but has recently been named on the Dean’s List for her academic success. This serves as an excellent example to our athletes still at home and who are aspiring to scholarships. The balance between academics and athletics is important if you wish to succeed. All coaches are asked to encourage their athletes to strive after this balance that guarantees success.
In this month of July, we will feature six (6) Coaching Camps, each of which will receive funding from TASVG. We extend sincere congratulations to the coaches involved and wish them every success.
The TASVG Competition Commission is already engaged in the draft Calendar for 2021. Of course, as happened with 2020, one is uncertain as to whether there will still be COVID-19 creating havoc with life in general and sport in particular. We can only hope for the best.
We continue to be thankful that we have been spared the worst and that as we move into the road race season, things will ease enough for us to have some exciting competitions.
We urge you to stay safe and keep fit.
