National Records falls

Simmonds and Nanton break records

This past weekend saw new records being established in SVG’s Track & Field record books.

The 2nd oldest mens sprint record, that of Joel Mascoll’s 1998 100m mark of 10.17, was eclipsed by Earl Simmonds, at the JAAA’s All Comers Meet at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica.

He clocked 10.12, which was rounded up to 10.13, when he won his heat, and finished second overall.

He had come close to moving the mark a few weeks prior, when he ran 10.15, but was aided by the wind in the slightest of margins, when it read 2.1 m/s.

Also in record breaking form was 400m Hurdler, Odeshia Nanton. The Lincoln University Freshman made headlines 3 weeks ago, when she broke the 32 year old event record set by Yvette Haynes.

Competing at the NCAA Division 2 National Championships, she lowered the mark again, with a narrow silver medal performance of 57.62.
