Athletes set national records

Overseas based Vincentian athletes have been certainly proving their worth to their schools, and setting national records in the process.

On Saturday, February 27th, University of Arkansas senior, Shafiqua Maloney, broke her own national indoor 800m record at the 2021 SEC Championships. The former Thomas Saunders Secondary athlete finished 3rd in 2:03.12, helping her Razorbacks to their 7th straight, and 23rd overall SEC title.

Mikeisha with her Pan Am U20 bronze medal

On the same weekend, University of Oklahoma sophomore, Mikeisha Welcome, who brought home a Triple Jump bronze medal in 2019, from the Pan Am Under-20 Games in Costa Rica, set a new indoor national record at this years  Big 12 Conference Championships. She broke the 31 year old record of 12.80m, set by Jacqueline Ross in 1990. Mikeisha leapt to 13.40m, and a 5th place finish at the meet.

Another senior, Kemroy Cupid, at Bethel College, broke the national indoor 60m record, with a win at the KCAC conference championship, on Feb. 19th. He ran a time of 6.73s, breaking Joel Mascoll’s 6.78s

Uroy Ryan is into his 2nd year at Jamaica College

A little bit closer to home, and this time in the outdoor arena, Fourth former at Jamaica College, Uroy Ryan, broke the national U-20 men’s Long Jump record at the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association qualification meet on March 6th. He tied for 3rd place with a jump of 7.34m, which bettered the previous mark set by Dexter Browne in 1991.
