A Carifta 52 recap

The 52nd edition of the Carifta Games concluded in Trinidad & Tobago, on Easter Weekend, April 19th to 21st, with mixed fortunes for the 13 athletes representing St. Vincent & the Grenadines.

The competition started on Saturday morning, with Carifta first timer, Tashanique Francis in the U17 Girls Shot Put. She finished in 7th place, but had a new personal best of 10.75m.

Then came the U20 Girls 400m, where Shaquania Jacobs also had a personal best performance of 56.54. She was 4th in her semi final, and did not advance to the final.

The 100m series saw 2 athletes getting into the finals of their respective races. Kenisha Welcome grabbed one of the automatic places, when she finished 2nd in the first semi, with a time of 12.05. She finished 7th in the final in 12.31.

J’mar Saunders announced his presence in a big way in the U20 Boys Semi Final, after winning it in a personal best 10.53. However tragedy struck in the final, as he pulled up injured after about 60 meters, but managed to cross the line 8th in 12 in 12.14 seconds.

The other 100m competitors were Romario McDowall who ran 11.38 to place 5th in Semi Final 1 of the U17 Boys event, and Delron Delpesche, who was also 5th, with 11.11, in the U20 Semis.

Also on Saturday afternoon, Roshaun Phillips placed 6th in the U17 Boys Triple Jump with 13.03m, Kesian John was 9th in the U17 Girls’ 1500m in 5:11.28, and Kenneth Gurley was 10th in 4:44.16 in the boys U17 1500m race.

Day 2 started on Sunday morning, with J’aivar Cato in the U20 Boys’ Long Jump, where he finished 6th with 6.98m. Kenisha Richards returned to the track, in the U17 Girls 200m, where she was 5th in Semi Final 1, in 25.57, followed by Shaquania Jacobs in the U20 Girls half lap, where she finished her semi final 3rd, in 24.97.

In his U20 Boys Semi Final, AJ Delpesche was 3rd in 21.71, after losing the sole of his shoe on the home stretch.

Kesian John and Kenneth Gurley were back on track on Sunday afternoon, in the 300om events. John was 13th after battling a sprained knee picked up in the race, but urged herself on, to finish in 14:23.20, while Gurley finished in 7th, in 10:31.80.

The curtains closed on SVG’s Carifta 52 participation with Tedre O’neil finishing 4th in the Boys Pole Vault with a height of 3.60m, and J’aivar Cato finishing the U20 Boys Triple Jump in 8th place with a distance of 14.68m.
