Maloney leads Team SVG to Tokyo Olympics

Vincentian gold and silver medallist at the NACAC U23 Championships in Costa Rica last week, Shafiqua Maloney, now heads to Japan and will carry the national flag of our country at the Opening Ceremony, 23 July.

An 800m NCAA 2021 finalist, Maloney is the most accomplished athlete on the Vincentian team to the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, 23 July – 8 August 2021.

Maloney has been pursuing additional competition following her NCAA performances in order to be in better shape for the commencement of the Athletics competition at the Olympics. She remains confident that she will make her country proud in Tokyo.

The international governing body for Swimming, FINA, and the IOC, allocated one male, Shane Cadogan, and one female, Mya

De Freitas, Universality Places to the SVG Swimming Federation.

Universality Places are usually awarded to athletes who have not made the established standards but who,  in the opinion of the national sports association, are deemed the most suited to benefit from participation on the quadrennial Olympics.

Team St Vincent and the Grenadines is certain that the swimmers are committed to the task at hand. Both athlete shave been to multi-sport Games before and should be well aware of the challenges they are likely to meet in the pool.

SVGOC Treasurer, Jacintha Ballantyne, is the Chief of Mission while Rawlson Morgan and Simone France are the officials of the Athletics and Swimming teams respectively.
