Athletics dominate Sports Awards Nominees

For the first time in the history of the National Sports Awards, Track and Field personnel are featured in every individual category of the 2019 National Lotteries Authority National Sports Awards.

Young sprint sensation, Ulanda Lewis is nominated for Junior Sportswoman of the Year, after she  won 2 bronze medals at the 2019 Carifta Games, in the Under 17 Girl’s 100m and 200m. Here at home, she broke her own 100m and 200m records at the Inter Secondary Schools Athletics Championships (ISSAC), on her way to being crowned the Intermediate Girls Champion.

Handal Roban, also enjoyed a double bronze medal season in 2019, to earn his nomination for Junior Sportsman of the Year. He followed up his 2018 Carifta U17 Boys 800m gold medal, with a bronze in the U20 category.

He then went on to the NACAC U18 Championships in Queretaro, Mexico, where he again took bronze, in the 800m.

Senior Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year nominees, Junior Ashton and Linda McDowall teamed up to bring gold to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, in several events. 

They won the male and female categories in the NACAC Chatoyer 10K for the 3rd consecutive year, brought home gold from the Caricaom 10K in St. Lucia, and McDowall finished 3rd in the Trinidad and Tobago Half Marathon.

Two Track and Field coaches also earned the nod of the selectors for the Coach of the Year award. They are Chester Morgan and Rawlson Morgan (not pictured above).

Chester coaches Ulanda Lewis, and is the Head Coach of the Central Leeward Secondary School, which won the ISSAC Girls Championship for the 3rd consecutive year in 2019. He is also in charge of the High Performance Track Club.

Rawlson is the Head Coach of the Exel Sports Club, and the St. Vincent Grammar School, where Handal Roban attended, before going off to Kingston College in Jamaica. Morgan led his school to win the ISSAC Boys title, for a seventh straight year.

The executive of TASVG congratulates all the nominees, for their selection. 

The NLA National Sports Awards will be held this Saturday, March 21st, at the SVG Community College, under the auspices of Governor General, Her Excellency Dame Susan Dougan O.B.E.
