Carifta 2022 nears confirmation

On Sunday 17 October 2021, Paul Reid, a journalist for the Jamaica Observer online newspaper wrote about the prospects of Jamaica being the official host of the 49th edition of the annual Carifta Games.

In his piece, Reid stated that the “Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) is confident of getting approval to host the 2022 Carifta Games set for April, the Sunday Observer has been told by reliable sources”.

Jamaica’s sports journalists knew that JAAA President, Garth Gayle, who is also Chair of the NACAC Competitions Commission, had earlier publicly stated that “The JAAA executive has met, and we have fully discussed the matter and has given its blessing for us to take on the mandate offered by NACAC to host the Games.” They also knew that the regional body’s President, Mike Sands, and General Secretary, Keith Joseph, were expected in the island during the past week for a series of meetings related to the Carifta Games of 2022.

The aforementioned meetings with the leadership of the JAAA and also with the government did take place. President Mike Sands, like the president of the JAAA, Garth Gayle, remains silent on the outcome of the meetings, saying only that ‘they went well and we are optimistic for a positive response”.

Sands also made the point that 2022 will see Jamaica celebrate its Diamond Jubilee as an independent nation. Hosting the Carifta Games in the year of the 60th anniversary of Independence will be a ‘perfect fit’, an excellent opportunity to showcase Jamaican athletes of the next generation, continuing the great track and field legacy that began with the likes of Arthur Wint’s 400m gold at the Summer Olympics of 1948 in London, UK.”

In his piece on Sunday, Reid reminded readers that “Jamaica has hosted the event six times, five times in Kingston – 1974, 1979, 1988, 1990, 1996 and in Montego Bay in 2011.”

Citing Jamaica’s dominance of the annual event, Reid noted that of the 48 editions that have been held thus far, Jamaica has emerged champions on 35 occasions. Such has been the dominance of Jamaica athletes.

All of NACAC wait with bated breath on the decision of the Jamaican government.
