CANOC and Peruvian Olympic Committee Forge Partnership for Sports Development

Dear Colleagues and Friends

At a meeting convened at the headquarters of the Peruvial Olympic Committee, the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) and the Peruvian Olympic Committee (POC) agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) “with the primary intent of formalising a partnership with the objective of fostering mutual recognition, embracing shared values aligned with those of the Olympic Movement, and enhancing cooperation in funding and supporting strategic projects identified by CANOC to fortify the sports infrastructure, governance, athlete development, and organisational capacities within the Caribbean region, whilst leveraging resources and expertise from both organisations.”

Members may recall that CANOC recently engaged in a Needs Assessment Survey with the help of the University of the West Indies and our regional and international collaborators which yielded the areas which are now reflected in the areas of collaboration between CANOC and the NOC of Peru. Accordingly, the strategic areas of cooperation include but are not limited to:

  1. Governance Enhancement: Developing and strengthening governance frameworks that include financial management, policy formulation, and implementation strategies.
  2. Administrative and Operational Capacity Building: Enhancing the administrative capabilities of CANOC members through targeted training in HR management, succession planning, and effective administration.
  3. Event Management and Athlete Support: Supporting the logistical aspects of event hosting, including athlete welfare, preparation for the Caribbean Games, and enhancing the overall quality of sports events in the Caribbean region.
  4. Educational and Development Initiatives: Facilitating educational programs focusing on coaching, sports science, and organisational management to elevate the professional standards within the sporting community.
  5. Comprehensive Marketing and Communications: Crafting and executing comprehensive marketing strategies to enhance public engagement, brand development, and effective stakeholder communication.
  6. Revenue Generation and Financial Sustainability: Creating robust mechanisms for funding, including sponsorship acquisition, grant writing, and financial planning to ensure the long-term sustainability of sporting organisations.

Both organisations, CANOC and the Peruvian Olympic Committee expressed that the MoU, which runs for four years in the first instance, can be renewed thereafter, allowing for an ongoing relationship that extends well beyond their respective shores, positively impacting sport across the Americas.

President of the NOC of Peru, Renzo Manyari, and President of the Pan American Weightlifting Confederation, Jose Quinones. Cliff Williams (ANT), Ephraim Penn (IVB), Christopher Samuda (JAM), Brian Lewis (Sec Gen, CANOC) and Keith Joseph (Pres, CANOC) were present for the discussions and approval of the MoU.
