As we begin another week in which we continue to be caught up in the throes of the dreaded COVID-19, Team Athletics St Vincent and the Grenadines (TASVG) stands extremely proud of the fact that on Saturday 22 March, we captured three of the awards at the National Lotteries Authority/National Sports Council National Sports Awards.
Ulanda Lewis, now aged 15, copped the Junior Female athlete of the Year for the first time after having been nominated for three consecutive years.
Handal Roban, aged 17, was a repeat winner of the Junior Male Athlete of the Year, having copped the title last year for performances achieved in 2018. He won gold at the Carifta Games back then
Linda Mc Dowall was the hat trick winner of the Senior Female Athlete of the Year. She is the first athlete to achieve this feat at the annual awards ceremony.
TASVG’ Executive and general membership extend sincere congratulations to the winners and also to Rawlson and Chester Morgan for having made the shortlist of finalists for Coach of the Year.
The good news of the aforementioned successes comes against the backdrop of a postponement of all formal activities of TASVG as a precaution against the spread of COVID-19 amongst its membership. However, with adherence to the recommended measures, training continues for several of our athletes who are still hopeful that the World Health Organisation will eventually find appropriate solutions that can bring an end to the current pandemic.
World Athletics is itself in constant communication with Area Presidents and athletes.
In our region, NACAC has been in touch with member federations and will reach out to athletes this week, to ascertain the current status in each case.
Last week the International Olympic Committee (IOC) convened meetings with several international federations (IF), National Olympic Committees (NOC) and athletes to discuss the latest developments and assured all stakeholders that it is doing its part to assist where necessary and possible, to bring an end to this crisis.
Here in St Vincent and the Grenadines, we are hopeful that as a people we continue to pray for all of us and urge adherence to the established and recommended protocols.
We believe that we have the faith and the requisite resilience to overcome all forms of adversity. COVID-19 is just the latest to confront us.
