6 make Carifta standards

The nation’s top junior athletes were up against not only the qualifying times and distances, for the 2022 Carifta Games Trials, but also the weather, as heavy intermittent showers and strong winds, played a role in the meet over the weekend, which saw 6 athletes making the required standards in their events.

On day one, on Saturday, Kyle Lawrence beat the mark of 10.80, when he won the Under 20 Boys 100m in 10.76. Kodi Grant jumped a distance of 6.68m in the Under 17 Boys Long Jump, going further than the 6.50m needed to qualify. On the female side, Under 17 Girls sprinter, Shonte Matthias, ran 12.21, to just get inside of the 12.25 standard.

On day 2, Lawrence was beaten into 2nd place by Devonric Mac in the Under Boys 200m. Mac ran 21.43, and Lawrence 21.73, both making the 21.80 standard. Also in the 200m, in the Under 17 Boys, Keo Davis stormed to a 21.68 win, going well faster that the required 22.00.

Grenisha Thomas had all eyes on her, as she was the sole competitor in the Under 20 Girls 400m Hurdles. She needed 1:05.00 to qualify, and ran 1:04.75.

These athletes join Jamaica based athletes Uroy Ryan, Amal Glasgow and Verrol Sam, who have already made qualifying standards in the Under 20 Boys Long Jump, 400m and High Jump respectively.

The local athletes will be involved in team training sessions over the next week, after which a final team will be named for the Carifta Games in Jamaica, from April 16-18.
